What is the Hawthorne effect?

The Hawthorne effect is the way people change their behaviour when they know they're being watched. Under observation we tend to try harder, follow the rules more closely and act how we think we should - so what you observe isn't quite what people do when no one is looking.

What this demo shows (text version)

You see a few simple measures of how someone works through a task - their care, their effort, and how many shortcuts they cut - with a toggle for whether they know they're being observed. Switch observation on and the care and effort jump while the shortcuts disappear; switch it off and the behaviour relaxes back to a more normal, looser pattern. The task itself never changed - only whether someone was watching.

That shift is the Hawthorne effect: people change their behaviour when observed, generally trying harder and presenting a tidier version of themselves. For research it means moderated tests and interviews show behaviour that's informative but optimistically inflated, so you triangulate them with field observation, longitudinal methods and real-world analytics.

Being watched changes behaviour. In usability tests and interviews people concentrate harder, are more careful and patient, and present a tidied-up version of themselves - so they look more capable and more engaged than they'd be alone with your product. This doesn't ruin research, but it does mean you have to account for it: watch what people do over time and in the wild, not just in the lab; reduce the feeling of being judged; and weight real behaviour and analytics alongside observed sessions. Treat observed behaviour as informative but inflated, not as a faithful record of normal use.

Named after studies at the Hawthorne Works where worker productivity seemed to rise simply because people were being studied, the effect captures a general truth: observation is not neutral. Knowing you're watched activates self-presentation - you perform competence, follow norms, and suppress the shortcuts and slips of unobserved behaviour - so measured behaviour drifts toward the idealised.

In UX research this is a real validity concern. In moderated usability tests and interviews, participants try harder, read more carefully, are more patient with friction, and may steer toward what they think the researcher wants - so success rates and engagement can look better than everyday use. It compounds with social desirability bias, where people also report what sounds good rather than what's true.

You can't remove it, so manage it: use unmoderated and longitudinal methods, diary studies and field observation to catch natural behaviour; lean on behavioural analytics from real usage; make participants feel the product is being tested, not them, to lower self-consciousness; and triangulate observed sessions with what people actually do over time. Read lab results as useful but optimistically biased.
