What is inattentional blindness?
Inattentional blindness is missing something in plain sight because your attention was busy elsewhere. When you're focused on one task, things you aren't looking for - even big, obvious ones - can pass right in front of you unseen, because seeing takes attention, not just open eyes.

What this demo shows (text version)
You're asked to do one focused job - count how many times a circle flashes blue. While you concentrate on that, a second, fairly obvious shape drifts slowly across the middle of the scene. When it's over, you're asked whether you noticed the shape. Many people, absorbed in counting, never saw it at all, even though it was in plain view.
That's inattentional blindness: perception depends on attention, so things you aren't attending to can go completely unseen however visible they are. For design it means important content placed outside the task someone is focused on may simply not register - put what matters in the path of the task, and never assume on-screen means noticed.
People don't see what they aren't attending to, however visible it is. Focused on a task, they look straight past banners, announcements, instructions and even errors that sit in clear view. This is why "but it's right there on the page" is no defence - if attention is elsewhere, it may as well be invisible. Put what matters in the path of the task, not beside it, and don't assume that on-screen equals noticed.
You were counting, so you sailed right past the thing that wandered through the middle of the screen - and it was hardly subtle. That's inattentional blindness: attention, not your eyes, decides what you see. It's the reason an important message parked outside the task someone is focused on can go completely unnoticed, no matter how visible you thought you'd made it.
The famous demonstration asks people to count basketball passes while a person in a gorilla suit strolls through the scene; about half never see the gorilla, because their attention is locked on counting. The lesson generalises: perception is selective, and anything outside the current focus of attention is at serious risk of being missed entirely, regardless of size or contrast.
In interfaces this is why genuinely important things get overlooked - error messages placed away from the field in focus, announcements in a sidebar, instructions above a form people have already started filling, or a key control outside the visual centre of the task. Users aren't careless; their attention is on their goal, and the rest of the screen fades. It's a close cousin of banner blindness and selective attention.
The fix is to put critical information in the line of the task, not adjacent to it: validate errors at the field and at the moment they matter, place must-see content directly in the flow people are moving through, and use motion or a brief interruption sparingly when something truly cannot be missed. Never rely on mere visibility - design for where attention actually is.
