What is mapping in design?

Mapping is the relationship between a control and the thing it affects - and natural mapping is when that relationship is so obvious you don't have to think. When controls are laid out like the things they operate (the classic stove where each knob sits where its burner sits), people get it right first time; when the layout fights the arrangement, they keep picking the wrong one.

What this demo shows (text version)

Four burners are arranged in a square. In "row" mode the four control knobs sit in a straight line, so there's no way to tell which knob drives which burner - you pick one and it lights a burner you didn't expect, exactly like the badly mapped cookers Norman described. In "natural" mode the knobs are arranged in the same square as the burners, so the front-left knob obviously controls the front-left burner; the pairing needs no labels and no memory.

The point is that natural mapping uses spatial arrangement to make a control's effect self-evident. When the layout of controls mirrors the layout of what they affect, people act correctly the first time; when it doesn't, they guess, err, and fall back on labels or learned workarounds.

Good mapping makes the link between a control and its effect self-evident through layout and spatial arrangement. The textbook failure is the cooker whose four knobs sit in a row while the burners sit in a square - you can't tell which controls which, so you guess, get it wrong, and memorise a workaround. Arrange controls to mirror what they affect and the guessing disappears. People shouldn't need a label or a mental lookup to know what a control does.

Norman's stove is the canonical example. Four burners in a square plus four knobs in a row gives 24 possible mappings, so people can't deduce which knob is which - they rely on tiny labels or trial and error. Place the four knobs in the same square pattern as the burners and the mapping becomes natural: front-left knob, front-left burner. The arrangement itself carries the information.

Natural mapping leans on spatial analogy and cultural convention - up means more, right means forward, a control near the thing it affects "belongs" to it. Sliders, volume controls, seat adjusters shaped like the seat, and brightness toggles all work because the control's behaviour mirrors a physical or learned expectation, so the right action is guessable rather than memorised.

Mapping shows up everywhere on screen, not just on appliances: a "next" control on the right, a delete that sits beside the item it removes, a settings layout that matches the page it changes. When mapping is poor, you get the digital equivalent of the stove - controls and effects that don't line up - and people compensate with labels, tooltips and memory. Fix the arrangement and you can often delete the explanation.
