What is the spacing effect?

The spacing effect is the finding that we remember things far better when study is spread out over time than when it's crammed into one session. The same total effort, distributed across days, builds much more durable memory than the same minutes done all at once - which is why last-minute cramming fades so fast.

You choose between two study schedules that involve the same total effort - cramming it all into one block, or spreading it across a week - and the demo animates a forgetting curve for each over the following fortnight. The crammed schedule starts high but drops away quickly, while the spaced schedule, refreshed at intervals, stays much higher. Same minutes studied; very different retention.

That's the spacing effect: distributed practice produces far more durable memory than massed practice, because each spaced review forces effortful retrieval that strengthens the memory. For anything that needs to stick - onboarding, training, learning tools - space the learning out and bring it back, rather than front-loading it all at once.

Memory is built by spacing, not cramming. Reviewing material a few times across days or weeks produces far stronger, longer-lasting recall than the same amount of study in one block, because each spaced review forces effortful retrieval that strengthens the memory. For anything that needs to stick - onboarding, training, learning a tool, or a study app - drip the learning out and bring it back at intervals rather than front-loading it all. Spaced repetition is the most reliable lever there is for durable memory.

The effect is one of the most robust in memory research and underlies spaced repetition. Each time you revisit material after a delay, you have to effortfully retrieve it, and that retrieval - plus the slight forgetting in between - strengthens the memory more than re-reading it while it's still fresh. Massed practice (cramming) feels productive because recall is easy in the moment, but it decays quickly.

Spacing pairs naturally with active retrieval: the biggest gains come from testing yourself at intervals rather than passively reviewing. Expanding intervals - revisiting just before you'd forget - are especially efficient, which is exactly how spaced-repetition flashcard systems schedule cards.

For design and product it argues against front-loading learning. Onboarding that dumps everything at once is mostly forgotten; teaching features progressively, in context, and reminding people over days builds real competence. Training, education products and habit-formation flows all benefit from distributing and repeating material over time rather than cramming it into a single session.
