What are the 5 dimensions of interaction design?
The five dimensions of interaction design are a model - words, visual representations, physical objects or space, time, and behaviour - for thinking about all the ingredients of an interaction. Together they describe everything a designer shapes when crafting how a person and a product communicate, from the labels they read to the way the product responds over time.

What this demo shows (text version)
A single everyday interaction - tapping "send" on a message - is examined through each of the five dimensions of interaction design. Words: the button label and the message text. Visual representations: the send icon, the bubble, the colours. Physical objects or space: the phone in your hand and whether "send" sits in thumb reach. Time: the animation of the bubble flying off and the "sending…" timing. Behaviour: how the app reacts to your tap and confirms the send, and how you react to that.
That's the model: interaction design is made of words, visual representations, physical objects/space, time, and behaviour (the first four from Gillian Crampton Smith, the fifth from Kevin Silver). It's a checklist against tunnel vision - teams often polish only the visuals, but a real interaction succeeds or fails across all five dimensions at once.
Interaction design is more than screens - it's five layers working together. 1) Words: labels, copy and microcopy that must be clear and human. 2) Visual representations: imagery, icons, typography and graphics that carry meaning beyond words. 3) Physical objects or space: the device and body - mouse, touchscreen, thumb reach, environment. 4) Time: change over duration - animation, sound, progress, rhythm, how the experience unfolds. 5) Behaviour: how the product reacts to input and how people respond to it - the feedback loop that ties the others together. Designing well means attending to all five, not just the visual layer, because an interaction succeeds or fails across every dimension at once.
Walk one ordinary interaction through the five dimensions and you see how much is really going on: the words you read, the icons you recognise, the device in your hand, the timing of the response, and the behaviour that reacts to you. Most people only think about the visuals - but an interaction is built from all five, and a weak link in any one (clumsy words, bad timing, an unreachable control) undermines the whole.
The framework, articulated by Gillian Crampton Smith (the first four) and extended by Kevin Silver (the fifth), names the materials of interaction design. 1D Words must be meaningful and simple. 2D Visual representations - typography, icons, diagrams, imagery - communicate what words can't. 3D Physical objects or space concerns the hardware and body through which interaction happens, and the environment around it. 4D Time covers media that change with time: motion, animation, sound, and the duration and rhythm of an experience.
5D Behaviour, Silver's addition, describes the mechanism and reaction - how the artefact behaves in response to people's actions, and how they react back. It's arguably the dimension that defines interaction design, because it's the dynamic feedback loop (action, response, response to the response) that the other four dimensions serve. Good behaviour makes a product feel responsive, predictable and alive.
The value of the model is as a checklist against tunnel vision: teams often optimise the visual dimension and neglect the words, the timing, the physical reach, or the behaviour. Reviewing an interaction across all five - is the copy clear, the imagery meaningful, the control reachable, the timing right, the behaviour predictable? - catches problems a screenshot never would, because real interactions live across every dimension simultaneously.
