What is the unity principle?

Unity is the pull of shared identity - we're more readily persuaded by people we count as one of us. Not just "people like me do this" (that's social proof) but "we are the same kind of person", a family, a profession, a tribe.

What this demo shows (text version)

An offer for a design toolkit, shown two ways. In neutral mode it reads as a plain advert: "A toolkit for building interfaces. Components, patterns and templates." In unity mode the identical offer is wrapped in shared-identity language: a "From one designer to another" kicker and "Built by designers, for designers like you - the tools we wished we'd had."

The product and terms don't change; only the sense of shared identity does, and the unity version tends to feel warmer and more trustworthy. That is the unity principle - powerful when the "we" is genuine, hollow and off-putting when a brand only pretends to be one of the group.

The neutral version was an ad; the unity version spoke as one of your own - "built by designers, for designers" - and it landed differently, warmer, more trusted. The offer didn't change a word. The sense of shared identity did all the work, and that's unity.

Unity is the strongest of Cialdini's levers because it isn't "people like me", it's "people who are me" - shared category, not mere similarity. Used honestly it's genuine community: speak as a real member of the group you serve and people feel seen. It's why "for X, by X" framing and authentic community building work.

Faked, it curdles fast. Brands cosplaying as your in-group - manufactured "we're all in this together" when they plainly aren't - read as hollow the moment the shared identity turns out to be marketing.
