What is cognitive accessibility?
Cognitive accessibility is designing so people with differences in memory, attention, language, literacy or processing - whether a permanent condition, a temporary state like stress or fatigue, or just being new - can understand and use a product. It's less about a single assistive technology and more about reducing the mental effort an interface demands.

What this demo shows (text version)
The same task - update your account details - is shown two ways. The "overwhelming" version piles on cognitive load: dense jargon, a dozen fields crammed together, a countdown timer creating pressure, and several competing buttons with no obvious primary action. The "clear" version asks one plain-language question at a time, removes the time limit, uses a calm consistent layout, and makes the next step obvious.
The work is identical; only how much attention and memory it demands changes. That's cognitive accessibility: reducing mental effort through plain language, one step at a time, predictable patterns, no needless time pressure, and forgiving errors. It helps people with cognitive differences and everyone who's tired, stressed or distracted. The test: could you complete it while half-distracted?
Cognitive accessibility is mostly about lowering mental load: plain language, one clear step at a time, consistent and predictable patterns, no needless time pressure, and forgiving error handling. It helps a huge, often-overlooked group - and it helps everyone, because the rushed, tired and distracted hit the same walls. Make the simple path obvious and the mistakes recoverable.
The overwhelming version threw jargon, a dozen fields, a ticking clock and competing buttons at you all at once - exhausting even at your best. The clear version asked one plain question at a time, with no rush and an obvious next step, and the task felt trivial. Same task; one demanded far less of your attention and memory. That reduction is cognitive accessibility.
It serves a large and varied group - dyslexia, ADHD, autism, learning and memory differences, anxiety - and also everyone in a temporarily-reduced state: stressed, sleep-deprived, distracted, multitasking, or simply new to the task. Designing for the hardest cognitive case makes the everyday case easier for all, the same way curb cuts help far more people than wheelchair users.
The levers are concrete: plain language and short sentences; one task or question at a time instead of a wall of fields; consistent, predictable layouts and patterns so nothing has to be relearned; clear, specific instructions; and removing unnecessary time limits, which turn a manageable task into a panic. Memory aids - showing entered info, not making people hold things in their head - matter too.
Error handling is where it's won or lost. People will make mistakes, so prevent what you can, explain errors in plain words that say how to fix them, and never punish a slip with lost work. The overarching test: could someone complete this while tired, rushed and half-distracted? If not, it's asking too much of everyone's attention, not just some people's.
