What is a field study in UX research?
A field study is research conducted in the user's real environment rather than a lab - observing how a product is actually used amid the noise, interruptions, other people and physical constraints of real life. Where a lab isolates a user with a task, a field study keeps the whole messy context intact, because that context is often what really shapes whether something works.

In the lab, the task is clean and isolated: a quiet room, a seated user giving full attention, two free hands, good lighting - and it goes smoothly. In the field, the whole real environment is kept and annotated: they're standing, one hand holding a box, wearing gloves, the floor is loud and dimly lit, a colleague interrupts, and the scanner's wifi keeps dropping between aisles.
Those contextual factors - none visible in the lab - are exactly what decide whether the design works. That's the value of a field study: it preserves the messy real environment a lab strips away. It overlaps with contextual inquiry but leans more observational and broad, and it trades experimental control for realism - so use it when context is decisive and pair it with controlled methods when you also need clean comparisons.
Real use doesn't happen in a quiet room with full attention - it happens standing up, one-handed, interrupted, in bad light, alongside other tools and people. Field studies capture that whole environment, surfacing the contextual factors a lab strips away. Use them when context matters; expect messy, less-controlled, harder-to-analyse data - because that mess is exactly the reality you need to design for.
In the lab the task went fine - quiet room, full attention, two free hands. Drop the same task into the field and the real constraints pile on: a colleague interrupts, the warehouse is loud and dim, they're using it standing up with gloves on. None of that showed in the lab, and all of it decides whether the design actually works.
The defining value is preserving context. A lab deliberately removes distractions to isolate the interaction - which is useful, but real use is saturated with the very things the lab removed: divided attention, interruptions, time pressure, poor conditions, other people and competing tools. Field studies keep all of that in frame, so you see how the design holds up in the environment it'll actually live in.
They overlap with but differ from contextual inquiry. A field study leans observational and often broader - watching behaviour, environment and social dynamics, sometimes ethnographically, with minimal interference - while contextual inquiry is an active master-apprentice interview while someone works. Both happen in situ; one mainly watches the wider system, the other mainly asks while observing one person's task.
The trade-off is control for realism. Field data is messier, less standardised and harder to analyse, you can't isolate variables, and it costs time to get to people's environments. So reach for it when context is decisive - physical settings, specialist conditions, real-world constraints - and pair it with more controlled methods when you also need clean comparisons or metrics. Realism and rigour each catch what the other misses.
