What is the Gestalt law of uniform connectedness?

Uniform connectedness is among the strongest Gestalt grouping cues: elements joined by a line, or enclosed together, are seen as one group - even when they sit far apart or look nothing alike. A visible connection generally beats proximity and similarity, acting at least as strongly as a shared region.

Six identical dots sit in a single evenly spaced row, so neither distance nor colour suggests any grouping - it reads as one row of six.

Switching to "connected" draws a short line between dots one and two, three and four, and five and six. Without moving a dot or changing its colour, the row now reads as three distinct pairs. The grouping comes purely from the connecting lines - which is uniform connectedness: connection is among the strongest grouping cues, generally overriding proximity and similarity.

A visible link - a line, a border, a shared container - groups elements more powerfully than putting them close together or making them look alike. So connect what you want read as one (a label to its field, a value across a table row), and take care not to accidentally connect things that aren't related.

It's why a table needs so little to work: a hairline rule down a column, or banded rows, connects cells into a record far more clearly than spacing alone. The same cue underlies a label tied to its input, a nav item with an underline, or steps joined by a connecting line in a progress tracker.

Because it's among the strongest cues, it's the easiest to misuse. A stray divider, a box drawn a touch too wide, or a line that bridges two unrelated blocks will bind things the eye then can't un-see. When something reads as grouped that you didn't intend, look for an accidental connector before you blame the spacing.
