What is the method of loci?

The method of loci, or memory palace, is a technique for remembering a list by mentally placing each item at a spot along a familiar route - rooms of your home, say - then "walking" the route to recall them in order. It works by hijacking our strong memory for places and spatial journeys to carry information that would otherwise be hard to hold.

The demo

What this demo shows (text version)

You take four items from a shopping list and place each one in a different room of a familiar house - the milk in the kitchen, the umbrella by the front door, and so on - picturing it there. Then you "walk" the route through the house in order, and the demo shows the items coming back to you, tied to their locations, far more readily than they would as a flat, unordered list.

That's the method of loci, or memory palace: it borrows our powerful memory for places and journeys to carry information that isn't naturally spatial. The design takeaway is that spatial structure aids memory - when features live in stable, consistent locations, people build a spatial map of your product and navigate it almost automatically, so moving things around throws that memory away.

We remember places and journeys far better than abstract lists, and the method of loci exploits that. Tie each item to a vivid location along a route you know, and recall becomes a walk rather than a struggle. The design lesson isn't to teach users mnemonics - it's that spatial structure and consistent location are themselves memory aids. When things live in stable, meaningful places (the menu always here, this action always there), people build a spatial memory of your product and navigate it almost without thinking; move things around and you throw that memory away.

The technique works because spatial and visual memory is ancient and robust: we're far better at recalling places we've been and journeys we've taken than arbitrary lists. By converting items into vivid images and depositing them at distinct locations along a well-known route, you give each one a strong, ordered retrieval cue. Walking the route in imagination then yields the items in sequence. It's a staple of memory champions.

The UX lesson is indirect but real. You won't teach users mnemonics, but the same spatial memory that powers a memory palace lets people learn an interface as a place: this lives top-left, that's always in the right rail, settings are down here. Consistent, stable location turns navigation into near-automatic spatial recall, which is why predictable layouts feel effortless.

The flip side is that moving things destroys the spatial memory people have built, forcing them to re-learn where everything is - a hidden cost of frequent redesigns and shifting menus. It connects to recognition over recall (a familiar place is recognised instantly), picture superiority (vivid images stick), and the value of consistency. Give features stable homes and let people build a map.
