What's the difference between social proof and authority?
Two routes to "you can trust this". Social proof points sideways - lots of people like you chose this. Authority points up - an expert or credential vouches for it. The crowd versus the expert; both borrow credibility, from very different places.

In social-proof mode it carries crowd evidence: a five-star rating, "12,000 happy customers" and a "bestseller" badge - the sideways reassurance that lots of people like you chose it. In authority mode it carries expert evidence: "Recommended by Dr Reed, consultant dermatologist" with a credential - the upward reassurance of an expert vouching for it.
The product is identical; only the source of credibility changes. Social proof suits everyday, taste-driven choices where "people like me" is the best guide; authority suits decisions where expertise matters and the crowd can't judge, like health or money. Knowing which route you're using - and keeping both honest - is the skill.
The same product felt convincing two ways: "12,000 happy customers" leaned on the crowd, "recommended by a dermatologist" leaned on the expert. Which moved you more is the whole point - they pull different people, in different situations, and knowing which you're reaching for is half of using either one well.
Pick by what your audience trusts in that moment. Social proof wins for everyday, low-stakes, taste-driven choices where "people like me" is the best guide - which restaurant, which app. Authority wins where expertise matters and the crowd can't judge - health, money, safety, anything technical. Match the lever to the decision.
They stack, but don't fake either.
