The labour illusion is the way visible effort makes a result feel more valuable and more trustworthy - sometimes even when the wait it creates is pointless. When a system shows its work ("searching 200 sites…", "checking 14 banks…"), people often rate the outcome higher than the exact same outcome delivered instantly, because the effort signals care and thoroughness.
The instant result felt almost too easy - did it really check everything? The version that showed its work, even taking a touch longer, felt thorough and trustworthy. That's the labour illusion: visible effort signals value. The honest move is to surface work you're genuinely doing; the cynical one is to invent a delay to look busy, which is just theatre at the user's expense.
